Built-Up Roofing (BUR) is the original commercial flat-roof system, with over a century of documented performance protecting warehouses, manufacturing plants, and institutional buildings. A BUR system consists of three to five alternating layers of hot-mopped asphalt and fiberglass reinforcing felts, finished with either a flood coat of bitumen and aggregate (gravel) or a granule-surfaced cap sheet. Each ply adds an independent waterproofing barrier — meaning even if one layer is compromised, the layers below continue protecting the building. In North Texas, the gravel surfacing provides the added benefit of hail impact resistance and UV shielding. Our crews are experienced in both new BUR installation and the specialized skill of removing aging BUR systems (including manual asphalt and gravel tear-off tracked by man-hours) for replacement with modern membranes.
